The Emotional Play of Food

Food is our companion and has always been on our side in whichever circumstances we may be in.

If it's our BFF's birthday we start surfing the internet for the best restaurant in the town.
Had a bad day at the office, we crib and open that big drawer of chocolates to eat few bars and relax.

Haven't we experienced such situations? Infinite times, isn't it?

Have you ever wondered why do we go back to food every time there is an emotional high or low?

As always, it starts from childhood. when a baby cries, he or she is been pacified by a bottle of milk. When family or friends visit, they get a pack of chocolates or cookies for the youngest member of the family to express happiness or joy.

In many such ways, most of us have connected food to our two strong emotions in life: Pleasure or Pain.

Emotions & Food

We all have a feel-good hormone called Serotonin. This hormone is basically responsible for most of our mood swings and also our food intake. Low levels of this hormone lead to anxiety and depression.

Serotonin affects our digestion too. Don't we remember our exam or result time?
Kuch kuch hota hai, Teacher..Aap nahi samjhoge. Jokes apart, but uneasiness in our stomach has a direct connection to our emotions and thinking process.
Our gut is also considered as our second brain.

Long gaps in food intake play an important role in causing irritation and hunger + anger (Hangry situation). Thus the timing of food intake has always been a critical point of discussion.
One should always try to keep the blood sugar levels normal. any drop or sudden spike triggers emotions too.

Thus, the basic points to remember are as follows:

Eat a balanced amount of carbs and protein.
Manage regular food timing. Do not keep fluctuating.
Eat in a happy environment.
plan your food in advance so that mood doesn't allow you to dominate.

Always remember to feed your body and not your feelings. Recognize the difference and you will feel sorted.
