Spice up your Health

Once upon a time ...we played cricket on our own rules. One six and the ball used to vanish for some 10 minutes. According to our makeshift rules, the batsman could take as many runs as they could while the other team desperately tried to fetch the ball.

OUR GAME OUR RULES.. oh, what fun!

But this fun was also involved with a lot of fighting, punching, and bruises. Back home, my bruises used to get treated with turmeric paste. Any fall or cut..this remedy was handy. That memory is stuck in my head.

Years later, we as parents were trying to play hide n seek with our kid, my husband happened to slip and had a superficial wound on his head. Even then, I quickly rushed to the kitchen and applied Turmeric paste to his wound which was then followed by a doctor's visit.

To my surprise, our doctor yelled at us for applying turmeric, I was shocked and surprised too. I didn't have the time and capacity to check with him about the reason.
During our follow-up session, I quickly raised my concern about why did he scold us regarding the turmeric application.
According to the doc, ADULTERATION was an important factor. In his medical practice, he had experienced issues like septic to common bruises due to adulteration in the spice. We were shocked to hear this.

Fortunately, the Turmeric paste applied to my husband was turmeric pounded at home and not the commercial one.
This was the turning point to include spices as part of my health food brand. To assure quality and guarantee the product.

Apart from giving color to the curry, turmeric has a compound called curcumin. This compound is known for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

One step further, curcumin is extracted and made tablets to help people with cancer, heart disorders, diabetes, and also for Alzheimer patients. Although, all this should be in the presence of a doctor's guidance & supervision.

Turmeric can be adulterated in various forms, artificial colors, chemicals are added, cheap flours are added to increase the volume of the spice, extracted curcumin turmeric is also sold at cheaper rates according to our Turmeric farmers. which comes as a shocker.

Thus, the source of the spice is very important, if that's difficult then at least buy it from a known and reputed brand.

Once you have the pure form of turmeric, it can be used in various forms.
Turmeric with dried amla powder in warm water to be consumed early in the morning.
Turmeric with Jaggery powder rolled into small balls are beneficial for
coughs and cold.
Haldiwala dudh or the famous Golden Latte is a soothing drink. I remember giving this drink to my kid until he was in his first grade. Haldiwala dudh is an amazing goodnight drink too to keep the body relaxed.

I hope this article triggers curiosity to know more about this humble spice which is used practically in all Indian curries.
