Immunity - That Plot Twist

Do you remember those days when we visited banks? Every bank has its welcome desk, counter to accept money, withdraw money, etc. So once a customer enters the premises of the bank, he/she is well directed to a counter to go to for their respective work.

The same principle can be used for our body too! When there is an attack by bacteria or viruses. Skin acts as the welcome desk (more like unwelcome) of the body and tries to keep away the bacteria and virus. But unfortunately, if it fails and the virus or bacteria gets its entry point then there are different types of cells in our body that act like soldiers who attend to the situation.

Some soldiers directly attack the infection and try to solve the problem. Few remember the type of infection and create antibodies to fight against them. Sometimes, the body has to create new antibodies to fight the situation.

During this entire process, in most cases, our body temperature rises which we normally refer to as a fever. This is an indication given out by the body about an internal attack and that it is trying everything possible to fight.

Most of the time, people rush to take medications to combat fever. They do not give their body enough time to develop these antibodies to fight the infection.
Always remember fever is a symptom and not a disease.

Immunity

Immunity is not an overnight game, its a process one needs to follow.
The habit of popping medicines for a headache, fever, or stomach ache without ruling out the cause, over time helps to suppress immunity.

Another striking cause is insufficient sleeping hours. People who compromise on their sleep are often negotiating with their immunity. Have a strict schedule when it comes to sleep. When we sleep, our body works on its wear & tear. That is the reason why food has to be consumed at least two hours before bedtime. If not, then the body will only work towards digestion and your internal damages won't be efficiently taken care of.

Vitamin C

All of us must have heard that one should have at least one fruit a day. The reason is to stock up on Vitamin C. This is a natural nutrient found in fresh fruits that help fight infections and in turn build immunity. Vitamin C by nature is very volatile, so there is an emphasis on the word  FRESH. That means fruits should not be sliced in advance and kept. Even keeping them in the refrigerator for future consumption reduces the nutritional value of fruits.

In India, our traditional plate of food, or thali, also includes one lemon slice along with other delicacies. Lemons are an amazing source of vitamin C. Actually, Vitamin C and Iron are best friends, so if vitamin C from a lemon is consumed, it helps the absorption of iron from the food in our body. so it is a win-win situation as iron helps to keep anaemia at bay. So this builds our immunity.

Turmeric

As mentioned in my earlier blog (see Spice up your Health), turmeric is real gold for immunity. Get good curcumin level Turmeric for cooking. It helps combat infections & diseases.  Vedus Foods Natural Haldi Powder has a higher curcumin content than the market average.  Get it here.

Masala Tea

Even a simple masala tea with cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, peppercorns have shown wonders in the game of immunity.

Herbs

During this lockdown, many of us have started gardening. Even 2 to 3 small pots on the window sill helps elevate the energies of the room. My suggestion would be to plant herbs like mint, lemongrass, and tulsi (holy basil). These three wonder plants are enough to boost the immunity levels of your family. all three herbs with some jaggery and salt have been a potent drink for my family in conditions like cold and cough. These herbs help our soldiers in the body to work better to fight against any infection.
